Andre eyeing podium finish ahead of the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint

After Supercars missed out on competing at the Sandown circuit last year due to COVID, Andre Heimgartner has his eyes firmly set on a top 5 finish this weekend at the Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint.

The Kiwi has previously finished with impressive results at this track, qualifying as high as third and finished second place back in 2019; which was the last time the Supercars visited the Sandown circuit.

“We’ve always gone well at Sandown. We were on the second-row last time we were there and brought home a trophy, which was pretty cool,” said Heimgartner.

“You tend to have more positive feelings going to a track that you’ve had success at. It’s probably the most successful track for me.

“The style of corners helps. You learn at different tracks how your driving style works for and against you. So, for Sandown I do think the track is more suited to my driving style.”

The Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint will be different to previous years, which has hosted the PIRTEK Endurance Cup, across a three-day event. However, this weekend there will be no co-drivers and will be compacted into two days.

“This weekend will certainly be a bit different. Obviously in the past we’ve had our co-drivers there. So, it’ll be interesting to mix things up a bit and see how we all go,” said the Kiwi.

“I don’t mind the two-day meetings. It just means we’re super busy and don’t have much time to make adjustments. But I think there’s positives and negatives to both the two- and three-day meetings. I think it’s a good change too, something a bit different.”

With success for Andre previously at the Sandown circuit, there’s no denying he’ll be pushing hard and working towards a podium finish.

“I think if we can get the cars in the top 10, top 5 I think we’re capable of having a real good weekend,” said Heimgartner.

“We’re still working out the new parts in the car and learning stuff from Bathurst, so we’ll see how it goes.

“It’s great having the fans back, so I hope to see as many out there as possible. The weather’s going to be good, hopefully we’ll have some fast cars and so it should be good watching!”

The Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint kicks off with practice 1 on Saturday 20th March 9:20am AEDT.
