Heimgartner claims NZGP podium on debut

Andre Heimgartner has come away with success on his debut at the New Zealand Grand Prix on the weekend, claiming second place on Sunday.

The 25-year-old had a topsy turvy run, finishing seventh in Saturday’s race and failed to finish Sunday’s Race 2 following an incident with Brendon Leitch. The incident triggered Heimgartner to suffer an injured hand which caused great discomfort throughout the race. Heimgartner managed to complete the race and will receive further treatment upon his return to Australia.

It all managed to come together for the Kiwi in the final race at the Hampton Downs circuit, charging his #24 FT-60 from eighth to second, just two-seconds behind Shane Van Gisbergen.

“I got stuck behind other guys too much, and then Shane had that awesome pace he had all weekend,” Heimgartner told the broadcast after the race.

“I’m really happy. We finally got somewhere with the set-up.

“Big steps forward, but a day late. It is was it is.”

Heimgartner heads back to Australia this week to re-join with Kelly Grove Racing ahead of the Supercars season.

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will commence at the Repco Mt Panorama 500 across Feb 26-28.
