Heimgartner ready to take on the concrete jungle

After spending three weeks in Darwin, the Supercars teams have arrived in Townsville ahead of the next double header which kicks off this weekend with the NTI Townsville SuperSprint.

Another short turn around between events, meant teams have had five days to prepare again, and this weekend will be their third consecutive race weekend. The Reid Park circuit is a street style track and one most refer to as the concrete jungle. Known for the fast-paced track and concrete walls, it is un-forgiving if a mistake is made.

“We last went to a street style track earlier in the year at Adelaide, so it’ll be great to get the Mustang back onto a fast-paced circuit again this weekend,” said Heimgartner.

“Adelaide was our first round with the Mustang and so we were still getting familiar with the car and had a pretty positive round. Hopefully now that we have had some time to try different things and have a better understanding of the car and its set up, we can have a good weekend.

“Given it has been some time since a street-style circuit, we’re not quite one-hundred percent sure where the car set up needs to be, but we have also found a window at the other tracks that we have been to, like Sydney and Darwin. I’m confident though that we’ll be able to put together a good package and get where we need to be.”

Last year, Heimgartner had a positive run at the North Queensland event, qualifying as high as eighth and finishing 12th on the Saturday. Whilst Sunday he just missed out on the top ten shoot out, qualifying 11th to finish 18th.

“We had a pretty good run here last year in the Nissan, so hopefully we can go better this weekend and bring home some results and maybe even visit that podium again” said the Kiwi.

The racing schedule will be similar to the previous rounds, with a knock-out style qualifying session before a top ten shoot out and a 39-lap race to follow. Sunday will see two back-to-back qualifying sessions ahead of two 39-lap races.

The Virgin Australia Supercars hit the track for the first practice session on Saturday 29th August, 10am local time.

The NTI Townsville SuperSprint will be broadcast live on channel Ten and Fox Sports, with streaming available on Kayo.
